What do you know about your bike? How has that affected your relationship with its maintenance and repair, as well as the experience of each and every ride on it?
Let's face it, many of the instructional videos on YouTube aren't helping. Folks are still turning to those videos for information. I once had a customer use "mineral oil" (a baby skin product) in their Shimano brakes, this results in failure. Often, with these resources, no one is there to really answer questions from an experienced perspective. IBW classes are all live, whether online or in-person, so questions are addressed immediately and nuances of repair are covered.
You may have spent time in a bike shop and if you were lucky watched a skilled mechanic perform what seemed like magic on a disc brake or a wheel that was bent out of shape.
My experience is that most bike (mountain or road) owners only want the most skilled mechanic they can find to work on their bike. I'm sympathetic to this plight. But sometimes the trouble is that you, as the bike owner and rider, don't know enough, or can't coax enough information out of the mechanic, to fully understand what's going on with your bike. From time to time you find a shop that offers some degree of classes and maybe that is enough.
You've found a shop with a skilled technician, who's seeming disheveled and unshaven face harbors more experience and knowledge of the machine you love so much, that you won't trust anyone else. After a couple years of remarkable service on your bike and loads of lunches and beers you've personally delivered to their work bench, they vanish.
At this point you come to the conclusion that you need to know more about your bike, whether you want to do more of your own repairs, or effectively communicate your bike's symptoms to your tech, or whether you can continue to ride the bike without extending damage to other components.
